Download and Save the Web!

We believe that access to the World Wide Web should be universal and not limited to people who are covered by the service of Internet Service Providers (ISPs) or by those who can afford to pay for an Internet connection.

For that purpose, we launched this project in 2009 to collect and organize all the websites and pages into a downloadable file collection.

To facilitate the download process, we have split The Web into 28 different files, each one with several gigabytes of data.  Once you have downloaded them, you will just need a web browser to start surfing offline!

We get many questions from users from around the world.  Below you will find our answers to the most frequently asked  questions:

Q: Isn't the Web too big to for anyone to be able to download it?
A: If we consider the whole World Wide Web, yes it would be time-consuming to download it.  Recent statistics from Google estimate that there are approximately 74.3 billion pages on the Web.  If we assume that each page has 10Kb on average, that is already 673,000,000,000 KB, or 673 Terabytes (Tb)!

Our detailed review, however, has found that 90% of those websites are pornographic or gambling related.  Once we removed those, the size of the Web is reduced to 10% of the initial volume, eg 62.8Tb.

As a next step we eliminated the illegal MP3 and movie files as well as the distracting YouTube videos.  This further reduced the size of The Web to 3,444 Tb, which is the size of our file collection.

Q: The files are pretty big, what if my Internet connection goes down?
A: We recommend that you use a download manager software, which will allow you to pause and restart your downloads.  We are also planning to release bit torrents of The Web in September.  Having The Web on CD is also useful in case you reach the End of the Internet.

Q: What about websites that publish new content every day?
A: We recognize that one of the biggest advantages of the Web are its dynamic update cycles.  To solve this problem, we are continually crawling all websites that publish new content and issue a daily "Update File" containing all the new information that we found.

Q: I won't be able to watch YouTube vides?
Unfortunately no.  But due to many user requests, we are now working on a second file collection that will enable the users to download all the videos from the 5 most popular video sites on The Web.

Q: Will I be able to use the Google search engine?
Yes.  We realize that having a functional search engine is vital to browse The Web, so we have cached the first 100 search results for the 1.754 million most common keywords and included them in "File 3" of the file-set.

Q: Can this project release a file collection only with the porno websites please?
A: Due to popular request (we get over 120 emails daily asking for this feature...) we are working on a file collection that will contain only the pornographic websites of The Web.  We have scheduled the release of this file-set for Q3 and as the size of those files will be significantly larger, as will the number of download requests.

Q: Will I be able to use the AOL chat or Twitter?
A: Unfortunately no.  We are working in partnership with the Computer Science department of the University of Kindsman in Georgia, however, to develop an artificial intelligence specifically for the users surfing the web offline with our files.  In order words, you will have bots that will interact with you in chat rooms, Twitter, and any other service where normally you would be able to interact with real people on The Web.

Q: What if I don't have an Internet connection at home?
A: We are deploying partnerships with several Internet cafes and WiFi hot-spots around the world.  These Internet points will basically keep a copy of The Web on their computers and users will be able to burn CDs or DVDs locally.

Q: What if I don't have money to go to an Internet cafe and can't access the Internet in any other way?
Please provide evidence that you have collected 750kg of used paper, 375 aluminium cans or 1400 bottle tops to our Carbon Footprint Dept at Free-Sets@MyWebDownload.com - once verified, we will send you a free CD set.

Update : The download links are currently inactive as today's download server capacity has been reached.  Please come back tomorrow.  Thank You.
